Our Award Winning School Garden

“One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides.”

W.E. Johns

Our school garden came to be at the beginning of March 2010. Having never had a garden before, the school community worked together to create a garden which we could all admire and be proud of. Children, teachers and parents dug the designated area, made planting boxes and painted posts that mapped out the area of our garden. In June 2010, the school won a Garden Competition with Woodies. The prize consisted of a €1000 voucher to spend in their shop that we used to develop our garden further. Presently, the garden gives life to many beautiful flowers and hearty vegetables which the children grow and harvest every year. As the years have passed, our garden has grown and it is now the home to a water collector, a bird feeding station, nesting boxes, a rain gauge, benches, butterfly boxes and a log pile to attract insects. These features have ensured that our garden is always buzzing with activity and wildlife! The garden is now in the seventh year of its existence and brims to life every Summer with vegetables, herbs and flowers. The garden with its vibrancy, colour and health is a wonderful asset to our school.

*Many thanks to Caroline Heavin for her infinite help and support with the garden.
